Both Norton and McAfee (two of the biggest anti-virus vendors) has speedier and higher performance version of its anti-virus program, but they are corporate editions and average users don't have access have to it. I would recommend AVG since it performs well and gives longer subscription plans than Norten & McAfee (2 years vs. 1 at the same price).

All products rated 8.5 or more (AVG, NOD32, Sophos) are excellent products. It is said NOD32 and Windows OneCare are lightest on system resources.

=======================
Free software:

Windows firewall uses the least resources.

You also need full time (active) virus protection and full time spyware protection.

All the following programs are free.
---------------------------------------------
Full Time (Active) Virus Protection
If you do not have active virus protection, install only one. All are excellent. I suspect AVG uses the least resources.

AVG Antivirus 7.5 Free Edition

http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10669237.html?tag=lst-0-1
or
Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition

or
AOL Active Virus Shield

Full Time (Active) Spyware Protection

Windows Defender

Install the following five programs and run weekly or at least monthly. You need all five. They will greatly increase your protection. They are not a substitute for full time spyware and virus protection. They do not run in the background, so they do not use resources unless you are running a scan or updating them.

Ad-Aware SE Personal (update + full scan)

Spybot Search & Destroy (update + immunize + scan)

SpywareBlaster: Update then open and click “enable all protection”.

try download avg free version from www.majorgeeks.com it doesn't slow down your computer plus you get the updates for free.. unfortunately, it's a free version so you won't get the firewall component unless you buy it.. :)

if you can afford to spend for the softwares you can buy norton or mcaffee.. :) antiviruses tend to slow down computers especially if you're using low end specs..
