MARS was named after the Roman god of war because the planet is blood red in color.. Mars resembles nothing more than rocky desert. There are many features on the planet that are not like anything found on Earth, or anywhere else. Valles Marineris is a canyon that could stretch from New York to California if were on Earth. Another interesting fact is that it has many volcanoes that are extinct. The largest volcano is Olympus Mons.It is much larger than Mount Everest. Olympus Mons is more than seventy five thousand feet tall and over three hundred miles wide at its base. These are just two examples of a variety of geographical features on the surface of Mars.
The symbolic colour of war is read becuase of Blood shed during the war. Redness is the reason for both the Planet Mars and Roman War God Mars got their name accordingly-

The Romans adopted the Greek gods. Thus Ares became Mars. In the beginning he was the god of the fertilization and crops (vegetation). Then later he became the god of war. The name Mars more than likely came from the latinization of the name Maris

In Greek mythology, Ares (Greek: Ἄρης) is the son of Zeus (ruler of the gods) and Hera. Though often incorrectly referred to as the Olympian god of war, he is more accurately the god of savage war, or bloodlust, or slaughter personified. The Romans identified him as Mars, the Roman god of war (whom they had inherited from the Etruscans) with Hellenic Ares, but among them, Mars stood in much higher esteem.

he is one of many old roman gods.
he was named after the red star (they thought it was a star) and red symbolized blood, which is closely related to war.
now why that 'star' was named mars, no help there but I am sure a professor at your local university could find out for you. Many have web blogs..let your fingers do the walking though google.
Hope that helps

If I'm not mistaken, I think Mars is the only god that has the same name in Greek and Roman mythology.
