There's an old expression which says, "There but for the grace of God, go I" and you don't have to be religious to understand what it means.

Often, we see the plight of others as the same or similar to our own misfortunes and can have considerable sympathy for their situation as fellow human beings.

During Bill Clinton's tenure, the term "I feel your pain" gained popularity as a generic example of what you've asked. One does not have to know another person when they see that person suffering, it becomes all the more intense if you've been through the same thing.

Even animals seem to relate to this emotion.

Simply because we are humans! We all have heart to feel and even if we have no relation to others we get to pity them because all of us have good hearts. Even the nastiest person has kindness within him/her!
