I applied for a job at a retail store and was called for an interview last Wednesday. They seemed to really like me and spoke to me as if they were going to hire me. They told me all the benefits, the job description, how many hours I should expect, what uniform I would wear...etc etc etc.

They just requested that I provide them with references, which I did. They did indeed contact these references 2 days ago.

So it's been 5 days since the interview and 2 days since they contacted the references.

Do I still have hope of them calling me back for a job offer? Should I stop waiting? Is there something else they could be waiting for? How long should I wait before giving up?

Hi,

The interview process entierly depends and varies from company to company.

-> Few companies conducts interviews with more number of candidates, hence takes more time in decision and anouncement or call back.
-> Most of the time they will be waiting for their management to take the decision which might be a reason for this delay.

I really understand your feelings. At this stage I would suggest you that

-> Wait for another 2 days and give a call to Retail store (who did the interview to you) and politely ask for the status.

And also in parallel, continue to search for other oppurtunities and if this job offer comes that is well and good else anyways you would surely get a job in other firm.

Do not lose the heart, Please go ahead. All the best. Keep updating me about your further goings.

Thank you.

I dont think you should give up just yet. People get busy or things get on hold. Or they need approval from above in big organisations. Wait another 3-4 days and give them a call to ask what's happening but be very polite and easy going when you call. If they've bothered calling your refs then they must be considering you seriously.

honestly, they probably would have called you already. i work retail and my boss always gets these crazy stalker girls calling daily, sometimes a few times asking her when they can work. they have to interview you if you seem qualified, and they also have to be nice to you, so call them once. talk to whoever. if they're not looking for your type, they'll give you SOME type of bs excuse. if they really do want you, they'll tell you to come in or something. but don't get excited and call too much.

You were supposed to write a follow-up note. I would go ahead and do it anyway, because the person they did hire might turn out to be a disaster right away! Here is a really good list of the stuff you should do. http://www.quintcareers.com/interview_follow-up-dos-donts.html
