Serial means it's a series. So if you know how to spell series, you have serial.
Also, look at your box of cereal. If you see "cereal" on the box enough times, it should sink in.
A dessert has more calories than a desert so it has more s's!

Serial and cereal--Cheerios is a cereal and also starts with c
Dessert and desert--Strawberry Shortcake is a dessert (Strawberry and shortcake both start with s and there are 2 S's in dessert) Desert has sand (one s)

Other often-confused words:
choose/chose: You have two Os to choose from, but once you pick one, you have to stick with the one you chose.
Loose/lose: The shirt is loose, but if you lose an o, it will be even bigger.
