The red gaurds were students who, during the Cultural Revolution, enforced proletariat ideals and laws in their areas. They were greatly respected by other students whose primary ambitions were become red gaurds themselves.

When Mao Zedong started the Cultural Revolution in 1966, he wanted a means to regain control of the Chinese Communist Party after the disastrous "Great Leap Forward" which resulted in Mao losing power to his rivals. Between 1966 and 1968, Mao's principal lieutenants, Vice-Chairman Lin Biao and Mao's wife, acting on his instructions, organized a mass youth militia called the Red Guards to overthrow Mao's perceived enemies and seize control of the state and party apparatus, replacing the Central Committee with the Cultural Revolution Committee, and local governments with revolutionary committees. In the chaos and violence that ensued, many revolutionary elders, authors, artists, and religious figures were purged and killed, and millions were persecuted and possibly as many as half a million people died.

The Red Guard was unleashed to attack many noted and well-known persons such as those working in education, academia, public media and literature. Many persons were dragged to open kangaroo trials and labeled by the Red Guard as "capitalist roaders" or "anti-revolutionaries". Additionally the Red Guards ransacked museums and destroyed many books and works of art that had been kept throughout China. Many famous temples and shrines, as well as well known historical sites were vandalised or destroyed.

The Red Guards movement and the Cultural Revolution remains a sensitive issue within China
