I worked in the UK for 6 years, and I complained about the illegal immigrants. One of the conditions of my visa was that I did not rely on the goverment for support. So I guess I prove you wrong.
After 6 years of being a good resident, paying national insurance and tax, they then decided to not renew my visa.
However, if I came in the chunnel, commited some crimes and then guilted the government in to letting me stay, I might still be there.

I can.. I am not a sponger, I don't receive any benefits whatsoever, I pay all my bills from my own pocket.
Illegal immigrants are just that...illegal and should not even be here.. why the hell give them money? It will only encourage more to come. Why don't more illegal immigrants go to Australia??..It's because the Aussies have more sense and backbone and say NO!!
Mark J has some good points about our home grown spongers too, why should we pay for their ciggies, booze and drugs? Give them food/basic clothes vouchers not money. They only squander it.

I most certainly don't sponge - I work bl**dy hard every day at work actually, but I don't agree with handing out phones/cars/houses and free money to immigrants directly off the boat - this is fact, it happens.
It just doesn't seem fair when WE as the taxpayer are paying for it. I'd rather try and see some incentives to get our own people on their feet and back to work.
I'm all for helping as many people as we can, but we have to be sensible about it. Yes, help them out - but don't hand them hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of benefits for nothing.

I do not "sponge off the state" as you so nicely put it. I work full time, have 3 children, a mortgage and a husband (yes all very expensive!!). i pay my taxes and that is what i disagree about. Why pay taxes to a government who lets illegal immigrants in and does bug*er all about shipping them out? I remember the days before illegal immigrants where we had free dental treatment, women were not giving birth in hospital corridors and old folk were not left to die in squallar.

They perceive immigrants as a threat to their resources. I would say that is a sort of competition because if immigrants get money from the state, eventually there could be a smaller share for the others!!!

I have no problem with legal immigrants who are keen and eager to work.
What gets on my nerve is British citizens who dont work have lots of children on benefits and waste their money on cigerettes.
We should have an exchange program send all the scallys to Africa, and import hard working immigrants.
After all we are all immigrants, who can truly say they are from a particular country, through history we have all been conquered...
