Yes, the lunar space elevator, or "moonstalk".

A few common science stories being mixed together here:

- The idea of a "space elevator", which would start in space, orbiting earth, and then be built in both directions, eventually reaching the earth.

- The fact that spider's silk is potentially strong enough to support the kind of stress such a structure would encounter.

Beyond the fact that we are not able to construct such a thing at this time, the moon orbits the earth, and NOT at the same rate that the earth rotates. In other words, its moving in relation to a given spot on the earth. So if you built a ladder or elevator on the equator, the moon would be at the top of the structures only once every 28 days.

Yes, it is true. Although it won't be made from any silk. The reason NASA wants to build a space elevator is safety, and price. It will be safer to ride an elevator to the moon than riding on a rocket. Second it will be 98% cheaper to send any cargo on this, than the current method. The only thing holding this plan to blue prints, is that no current material currently exists that is strong enough for such a project. Although breakthroughs in nanotechnology may be the key, through nanotechnology a new material has been made called carbon nano tubes, this stuff is 100 times stronger than steel, and 10 times lighter, it will be cool when it is built.

They are making some sort of spider web like material. it is currently under testing. It could take a long time in developing this material because it should withstand the debris from space which are going to bombard it and it should be able to repair itself when any significant damage can be done.

I'm sure they would like to do this but it's just too impractical as it is right now. We can barely get things into orbit around the earth let alone build a cable 240,000 miles to the moon. I hope it does happen one day, but don't hold your breath.

yes NASA is making a ladder from the earth to moon but they're still testing it, im not too sure they're using silk to make it
