did it explode on impact, or above ground?

The bomb exploded above ground just like the bomb tested in the US, to see if they would work.
I can't recall the height though

To maximize explosive force, bombs are usually detonated above ground level. This allows the destructive blast wave to travel further than if were detonated on the ground. Hiroshima was actually detonated 2000 feet up, so to truly understand the power look at the pictures of the destruction then realize the bomb was almost half a mile in the air when it exploded.

It exploded about 1900 feet above ground. This increased the effective radius of destruction, and minimized fission products getting into the soil. The Nagasaki bomb was detonated similarly.

Above ground and yes it hit Hiroshima with great devastation and 110000 deaths

Both Nagasaki and Hiroshima were mid altitude explosions!
