Right click on the "My Computer" and then on "Properties". Go to the "Advanced" tab. Then "Performance Options" and then "Change".

Here you can set the virtual memory size on the various hard disks in your computer.

1. Right click on My computer, choose 'Properties'.
2. Inside Properties, go to 'Advaced' tab, In the 'Performance' Frame, click on 'Settings'
3. Inside Performance Options window, choose 'Advanced' tab, then on Virtual memory frame click on 'Change'.
4. Choose C: drive (or what ever drive you like, but make sure you only set it on 1 drive)
5. Choose 'Custom size' radio button, then set the size (usually the virtual memory size is 1.5x your RAM size; Let's say you have 512MB of RAM, so the virtual memory should be 1.5 x 512 = 768MB). Set the same size in both box (initial and max size).
6. Click Set, OK, OK, OK
7. Restart
8. Done ;D

Hopefully my guide is not too hard to follow.

Another vote for checking what applications are running on your computer -- and some may be running without your knowledge! It's not simple, but if you learn how to use msconfig, you can find these applications. After configuring your msconfig, will start your computer faster and have more memory to run it. See the links below.
