Britian and Germany did not think the seas were big enough for both of them. For centuries Britannia ruled the waves and then Germany started building a Navy that rivaled Britains and they began annoying each other and made alliances. Britain signed one with France and then France signed one with Russia. Germany signed one with Austria.

The assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand was a pretex for World War I. Austria decided to punish it Serbian subjects and Russia came to the aid of its Slavic cousins. That should have left it as a war between Russia and Austria. However since Russian was at war, France was at war and since France was at war, Britain was at war. Since Austria was at war Germany was at war.

If you want to get an eye opener re America's entry into the war read the book, Lusitania by Colin Simpson, a Brit.

It's a shame they don't teach Military History in schools outside of military academies, isn't it? There are those who think if we just ignore the problem, it will go away....
