Assuming you would have at least one available slot, yes, that is correct. If all 4 of your RAM slots are full, however, you would need to buy more in order to counteract the RAM that you would have to remove. I'm guessing that you probably have available slots, however, and not 4x256MB sticks; especially since your PC supports up to 8GB RAM with 2GB in each slot.

It all depends.
Some motherboards have two slots, others have 4.
So there is a possibility that you could have two 512Mb sticks installed in a board that only has 2 slots for a total of 1 gig of ram. If that is the case, then you would need to buy two 1 gig sticks to get it up to 2 gigs.
Most likely, you will have at least one free memory slot, so you should only need to buy a 1 gig stick.

If you have a single 1GB stick in your system then all you would have to do is buy another 1GB stick.
If you have 2 512MB sticks, you would have to buy a 2GB stick and swap out one of the 512's, giving you 2512MB

you need to check the ram banks in your PC you may have 1 gig but it could be 2 x 512 sticks and the mainboards that dell use usually only have 2 ram banks if your lucky enogh to have a 1 gig stick in there make sure you match the brand and speed otherwise they may not be compatible

Check to see if the 1GB RAM you have is 1x 1GB stick or (more likely) 2x512MB sticks. In the latter you would need to get 2 1GB sticks or one 2GB stick which is pretty expensive. If there's only one stick then you just need to get one 1GB stick.

You night be maxed out already.
The easiest way to find out what you can do is use the 'systemscanner' on the www.Crucial.com web site. It will tell you what you can do, and what type of memory to buy.
You might consider getting it from Dell if your pc is still under warranty. They usually have good prices.
