This first part is very negative, and does not, under any circumstances, reflect my own opinion, but I feel I must say it. Through extensive research, it could quite possibly be proven that there are no "happy" animals, because most must fight for survival day after day.
I believe, however that animals can be very happy, because each animal has a niche in life. If that animal fulfills that niche, I could imagine that the animal in question could be quite happy indeed. As for a specific type of animal...
I would definitely have to say that the penguin is the happiest of them all. Think of human relations. If a woman was to have a baby (completely legitimate, with a man she loved enough to marry and be with for any given alotment of time) and then leaves for months on end, leaving the baby and his father all alone in barren conditions without food, I don't think that marriage is going to last. Penguin mothers, after laying and incubating their egg for a short period of time leave the egg with their mate, the father of the egg/future penguin. She then leaves to find herself food and get enough to bring back to the male. This can take anywhere from 5-8 months, and yet, the male is still there when she gets back, ready for the egg to hatch and to love and care for it alongside the mother. If this isn't happiness, what is?

My two shih tzus wrestling on the floor, trying to bite each other's faces off and making terrible sounding noises - all the while with their tails wagging a million miles an hour. They crack me up. Pax - C
