Did you replace the distributor cap?could be the graphite stem. You must have a clean good ground at the battery for it to start.Timing belt may have jumped time.Could have a stuck open EGR valve. Is the condenser properly grounded.May need carburetor rebuild.

when you say it doesn't sound right..does it just seem to keep on spinning with no results.. then look on the side of the distributor..you will see the ignition module mounted to it...take the wiring connector and remove it from the module and clean the contacts, then hook it back up...but make sure that you haven't fouled the plugs, and then try and crank it...with everything you have tried..you must be broke...if the plugs are wet, then you have fuel, but no spark...and you can have compression in the cylinders, but if you have no spark to ignite the fuel, then you have to start back from where the engine receives it's spark..check all the fuses and relays, and if you keep on replacing parts, that are not needed, then you will be broke by the time you solve the real problem...let me take you thru some test.. then you can find you problem..email me back at gotspeed7883@YAHOO.COM

Sound like you do not have spark, check your coil again, there is a small capacitor on top of your distributor connected to your contact point, how you check? some you need to swap with good one to confirm. Have you check the fuse and make sure 12V go to your coil.
Hope this help

i had an 89, 91 and 94 escort before. they are great cars, but when something is wrong, it is usually hard to figure out. change oil regularly? once my altenator went and i got 3 bad ones from the auto parts store before i got a good one. they were tested put in and then only worked a day or two. you could also have the the firing order wrong. that happens a lot. does it start at all? if not, check timing belt.
