Underdeveloped countries have a tendency to be more of a tribal type of society and they try and live as their ancestors lived. This type of tradition could be religious in nature or a theoretical means of survival. This means that in many traditional countries that include the countries that are under developed women are considered second citizens.
Not necessarily mistreated, but not given the rights that women have in the US or the UK. Most of these women have accepted their roles, because they too are practicing tradition.

I believe that the progress or regression/depression of a country affects womens ability to become independant, free thinking/speaking citizens. Sure, "One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all" is an amazing concept but it has never been brought to fruition, even to this day. The United States has always considered itself to be a christian nation adhereing to the fundamental principles that God/Jesus put forth. Christianity says, Jesus (gave) to save, whereas, the muslim faith says, (submit) that you might survive. Our focus is on what Jesus did for us not what we can do for him. Every religion has an underlying princple that it considers fundamental to the believer and this will impact the development and progress of every man, woman and child in that country.
We live in a theocracy/democracy country which is great and is consistant with the Bible. In respect to our governement, God and social justice should go hand in hand, but that has'nt always been the case, esp, in regards to women's rights. Our God allows us to make independant descision, ie, you have a choice, we call this free-will, to serve him. The muslim faith says your choice is serve God/Allah/submit or there will be severe maybe even fatal consequences. That is a major fundamental difference that affects the lives of women and will be used to keep them in servile, subordinate positions in life. We have got to get religion right for the sake of all women around the world. The freedom of choice means the ability follow your own concscience, and to this day alot of women still don't have that fundamental freedom.

in a number of ways you just have to look at the difference in treatment for women in muslim cultures to women in western countries to women in africa - third world countries. The differences are somewhat obvious.

Consider southern India. (Or is it northern? I can't remember.) It is not as industrialized as the rest of the country, and illiteracy is incredibly high. Because of this, the women of the region spend their days bearing and rearing children. In more advanced regions, they work and have fewer children, keeping India's booming population from blowing up in their face.
