I assume that your audio used to work. You can try to roll back the driver under the audio device in Device Manager. Right click My Computer to get Properties and Hardware.
Another approach from the device manager is to Remove the device and reboot. When XP boots it will find the audio card and try to reinstall a driver.
One of these tricks is likely to work. If not, you may have to download a driver from the Compaq (now HP) site.

The ONLY driver you should install is on the Compaq web site.
Start at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/static_software_select?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en& and enter your PC info, and it will let you download the driver.
Follow their instructions for installing (usually just run it) and it will install the driver.

Go to HP's site. Check for the latest drivers by giving your model number.
