My old computer has a 2.0 ghz processor, 512 mb of RAM, and a 256 mb video card and also loads slow. I kept it very clean as well. I don't think it has problems with adware, spyware, viruses, trojans, fragmentation. I think it just needs an upgrade.

My new computer has two 2.2 ghz processors, 2 gb of RAM, and a 512 mb video card. Everything runs much more quicker and smoother now.

I play World of Warcraft and my test on my pc is how fast I can alt+tab out of WoW to look up something online.

My boyfriend's laptop was also running very slowly. We were starting to think it had problems. We upgraded it from 512 mb of RAM to 2 gb of RAM and it runs much better now.

I suggest starting by adding some RAM if you're not looking to buy a new computer, delete old programs you don't use, take off unneccessary programs off your startup list.. or if you're not highly attached to everything you have- reformat your computer and start with a clean slate.

I sugest you check for updates on your Browser. Click Help and then Check for updates. Also, if you have any add-ons, also update those clicking Tools, then Add-ons and Find Updates. After this, go to Start and choose Run. Type in COOKIES and Go, a window will pop up. Click on one and do Ctrl + A, then delete all. It won't let you delete a file called Index, ignore this. Click Run again and type %TEMP%. Proceed the same way and delete all. Restart your computer and give it a go, it should be ok after this. Just for curiosity, what speed do you have on your modem?

Start => Run => type MSconfig select startup tab and turn off anything you don't want to startup when the computer starts. I bet you have more than 20 things checked with the list of stuff you mentioned you have.

To find out what programs/processes to terminate:

Run PCPitstop "Full Tests" and "Running Programs"
It will list programs that can be disabled to improve computer performance. Start MSconfig and uncheck the boxes for these programs.

Internet speed

Run speed tests

http://helpme.att.net/dsl/speedtest/
http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/

Then compare results with your internet providers maximum and minimum upload and download speeds. If you are below the minimum specs complain to your internet provider.

If you do not have high speed internet, DSL starts a $5 more per month than dialup. I use ATT. Most DSL providers offer several different speeds. I found that if you are going to watch streaming video you need a measured download speed of about 2Mb/s or faster.

AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet Express Package
384 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps download speed
128 to 384 Kbps upload speed $14.99/ month

AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet Pro Package
1.5 to 3.0 Mbps 384 to 512 Kbps $24.99 /month

AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet Elite Package
3.0 to 6.0 Mbps 384 to 608 Kbps $34.99

press ctrl alt del and then kill the unnecessary processes, also go to start > run and type msconfig > enter ... you could disable some unnecessary processes from starting up automatically each time the system reboots. you could disable processes like help and support, error reporting, printers etc.
