may sound silly, but it works try covering the apples with knee high hose. Worms don't burrow thru the nylon. I don't use chemicals.

Your local garden store should have the sticky bands you place around the tree about 10" up. It is like fly paper and the worms get trapped.

Go to a nursery and they will be able to tell you what to spray on the your apples to prevent the worms from eating away at them

Worms generally don't eat their way in from the outside; they eat their way out from the inside. The eggs are layed while the tree is in blossom. You need to spray them at that time
