Im building additional rooms and a detached garage on my home which has been occupied for years.
Can i claim back the VAT on either the labour or materials for this build ??

no only new build thats zero rated although if you go energy efficient heating wise your installer should be able to cut the boiler down to 5%

Only if you are Vat registered.

I'm not suggesting that you break the law, but some people would just try not to pay the Vat in the first place rather than try to claim it back later.

Good one.but sadly nope. You require a vat number and all that jazz, but on the bright side you would be saving some money by not hiring a builder,and you get the "satisfaction" of a job done by yourself
