Funny old world is it not?

Yesterday's headline was - 'chief of police says there are too many surveillance cameras in our communities'. Ergo, Does he want us to get rid of them ?

TODAY - police are looking at camera recordings hoping to catch those who set fire to the Cutty Sark. (A very sad event.)

Who finds this rather ironic?

The deputy chief constable involved was referring to CCTV set up in quite villages, his view is that CCTV should be used in areas where there are more violent types of crime on a frequent basis. Such as rape/murder etc.
That of course does not mean that the people in the quite villages are not entitled to try to stop vandalism and other crime which whilst not life threatening can be very unpleasant and expensive.
It was refreshing to hear a policeman indicate that electronic surveillance is not the be all and end all of policing.
It does come down to money though, the villages cannot afford to pay for a human police presence so the CCTV provides a relatively cheap and low cost maintenance alternative as a minor crime deterrent.

As long as a camera is not placed in an area that would be considered private (i.e., restrooms, dressing rooms, etc.), then I think it;'s just a great safety device. I know it seems like big brother, but in my opinion, I'll lose some privacy just for the extra eyes it gives police in dangerous situation where the criminal needs to be removed. I'm surprised a Police chief would want to downsize camers servelliance. Suppose this changed his mind?
