Does the 8 year old want it just because everyone else has one? That might not be the best, if it's not needed. If she wants it because she's afraid something might happen to her and she wants to be able to reach you or her father, they do sell cell phones designed for children that can only call like 3 contacts. Maybe sit her down and have her list all the reasons she wants a cell phone and then you and your ex can come to a better agreement?

I agree with your ex, she's too young to have a cell. If she's asking for a cell at 8, imagine what she will ask for at 14.

An 8 year old doesn't have a full fledged social life and won't be gone from home alot. You might also risk getting the phone stolen. I don't think at child at that age should be concerned with a cell phone, let them enjoy their childhood while they can. I suggest getting a Firefly from Cingular. It has just a few buttons with programed numbers (mom, dad, etc) and of course and emergency button.

It all depends why they want or need the phone.I myself don't like to see young children with mobile phones, but then I moved to a place where if my children wanted to stay at a friends house the friends houses are usually a 15 minute drive away and in areas in which in my daughters friends live they don't have broadband so if some one was in their friends houses using the Internet I wouldn't be able to ring them to see what time to pick them up,or what time they would be home so I bought a mobile each for my elder children to be used in circumstances like that only.

I kind of agree with you on this one and here is why. we don't have a land line just because for the most part out whole fam is on the same network and our lil boys friends were always calling mine or my wifes phone so we decided to get him a cell phone just to use at the house we got a cheap plan with only like 400 minutes and it was actually cheaper for us to get a land line and in most cases it is cheaper than getting a second land line so i really don't see a problem with this and we give him rules on when he can and cant use it so like i said i think its not a bad idea it also makes them feel like they are important and have more responsibility because it is a privilege to have a cell phone its not just a toy

There wouldn't be a problem if you wanted to give your child a cell phone to check up on them, but since the child is asking for it, that's a different story. More than likely, they want one because one of their friends got one, and now having one is "cool" and that's what they want to be.

Here is the way I see it. My kids will get a cell phone when their old enough to pay the bill. We are raising a bunch of spoiled kids that feel like they are in-titled to everything. Who's fault is it? The parents.

My younger sister got a cellphone when she was 9. It's not too young, based on what she wants to use it for. It's always good to be able to keep your kids in close contact, and at a phone call's distance.

She's too young, she just wants to fit in with the crowd, tell her wait till she's 16, has a job & can afford it.
