If the starter works the ignition switch must be good if it turns over. The coil, wires and possibly plugs would keep spark from ignition unless your not getting any gas from carburetor or fuel injection.

YOU DID NOT MENTION IF THE ENGINE IS TURNING OVER OR NOT, BUT YOU TALK ABOUT THE BATTERY AND THE CABLES. SO, I SHALL PRESUME THAT THIS DE VILLE IS NOT EVEN TURNING OVER. WELL IN THAT CASE, THERE IS ALWAYS THE STARTER, OR THE STARER SOLENOID OR THE STARTER RELAY OR IT COULD EVEN BE THE START SWITCH. GET IN THERE AND DIG FOR THE ANSWER. MOST AUTOMOTIVE STORES NOW-A-DAYS HAVE A TEST BENCH IN THERE, TAKE YOUR STARTER OUT AND HAVE IT TESTED. THIS ELIMINATES OR FIGURES OUT THE PROBLEM RIGHT NOW.

A car runs on fuel, and fire (spark) and if one of the two are not present then the car will not crank...Have you check to see if you have fire to the spark plugs? Have you checked to see if you are getting fuel to the cylinders? Have you checked to make sure that you don't have any blown fuses or bad relays? Can you tell me what type engine you have?
