If you consider how many guns there are in the country (250 million) compared to how many illegal gun deaths (20,000), you get one death for every 12,500 guns.

As a fraction, that's zero point 00008 percent of all guns are used to murder.

they think guns are big problems because they can make them look like huge problems. id say knives are more dangerous quite frankly. but also people might over look the danger-potential of guns too much. guns are quite sweet i think, theyre great for personal defense and make you feel ultra safe.plus no one looks at the statistics. they think billions of people die from guns or something.

Question: Why do some people think guns are a big problem in the U.S?

Answer: Because people kill people with them. Even if it's a fractional amount, it's still not good.

Granted, the majority of gun deaths are suicides, there are still a lot of them.

The main reason most people think guns are a problem is : Why do we need them?

Personally, I actually believe guns are necessary, but I can't see the practical value in selling AK-47's to citizens.

Also, the statistics we both quote are faulty, because the reality is, it's based on reported/recorded "illegal gun deaths," but there is a chance that many murderers who use guns will be smart enough not to let the body be found.

Just my thoughts. I think people are excessively gun-panicky too, but I can understand why.

Guns aren't the problem in the U.S. The problem lies within our bloodthirsty society and violent culture. Kids see tens of thousands of murders, rapes and muggings on TV before they become adults.
Also, guns are now too advanced and high-tech. Why does anyone need the kind of weapon gun manufacturers sell today? For personal protection? For sport hunting? Or just to be a 'macho man'??
The argument, of course, is that it's our 'constitutional' right to own guns, and 'law abiding' citizens shouldn't be impeded from owning as many weapons as they wish.
Fine.
Let's allow all these 'law abiding' citizens to own all the damn guns they want to own. But, what 'law-abiding' citizen would reject the idea that it might be a good idea to register their weapons, just as they register their vehicles.
What law-abiding citizen would disagree with the notion that gun owners should be licensed and given some basic training before being able to purchase a gun? The same people that object to such "gun control" don't object to getting a driver's license with their photo on it. Wouldn't it also serve as a safety precaution in your gun was stolen and used in the commission of a crime?
The argument that "zero point 00008 percent of all guns are used to murder" is really lame. What does that mean exactly - that as long as the ratio remains low, murders by handgunds are acceptable?
I would think it would be in every gun owner's best interests to have a certain amount of 'gun control" enacted.
Finally, gun owners fight for their "right" to own guns. The U.S. Constitution (Bill of Rights, 2nd Amendment) gives us the right to "keep and bear" arms, but that intent was not so that we can all go around with AK-47s and shoot whomever we please. It was intended to afford us the opportunity to take up arms against an oppressive and tyrannical government, something few gun owners ever have had the gonads to do. -RKO- 05/21/07

when they say gun they mean handgun usually .45 automatic or automatic weapons of different kinds or smiautomatic weapons what puzzlesme is i though there were laws that specific kinds of guns were not to be sold to civilians that it was illegal to own them unless issued by the army or that only the army was supposed to have them and that hunting rifles and the like were alright but machine guns and military weapons were not i thought it had been that way since al capone and those gansters ran around with tommy guns that it was illegal then for tommy guns to be owned same with others especially without good training another thing people claim guns protect them from tyranny on part of goverment well the ATF FBI and what not ahave proven albeit in a collossol blunder that those guns are not protection at all how long would the gun owner like those at Waco last against the U.S. ARMY or NATIONAL GUARD

You also have to take into account the non-illegal gun deaths; these are what the big problem come from because people are accidentally being killed by guns that weren't bought as a murder weapon. These deaths are the real problem with guns, not the illegal deaths.

Ok, then why have traffic laws at all? After all only fraction of millions of cars get in accidents.

Why have any laws at all? After all only fraction of millions of people here commit crimes.

It sucks they're bullying us, LAW abiding citizens with these silly laws eh?

Some people think guns are a problem because they just listen to the media and don't do research on there own.
