The best pet for a busy person is TWO cats. They can keep each other company when you're not home, they keep you company when you are home. The best exercise for a cat is another cat. Keeping them indoors insures that they will never get lost and will (usually) stay much healthier. They will live about 15 years if kept indoors (barring tragedies like cancer...) Keeping the litter box clean takes maybe two minutes a day.
A dog is a WONDERFUL pet but a lot, LOT more work. If you have the time, space and energy, dogs are the best pets.
With ANY pet you want to be sure you can afford vet care -- even small animals such as rabbits or gerbils might need a vet some time.

I'd have to say either a cat or a ferret. You can get either one in any variety of shapes and colors, and they're both loving and rewarding companion animals that amuse their human counterparts to no end.
Cats are independent, affectionate, playful, relatively clean (unless you luck out and get the dreaded pee cat), compact and great for cuddling. I love my beasts.
Ferrets are a lot like cats, although perhaps somewhat more mischievous, and require about as much maintenance. They groom a lot, enjoy playing and interacting with people, usually enjoy baths, have loads of energy, cuddle with you when they've tuckered themselves out, and love squirreling away their toys. They have an undeserved reputation for being smelly: you just have to keep up with the litter like you would for a house cat.
If you don't have other small companion animals roaming around the house, ferrets can be box trained and take the place of a small free range indoor cat or dog. Just make sure you "ferret proof" anything they can get into, or out through, so they don't get into too much trouble.

It depends on how large your home is, how much time you have to spend with them, whether your family or roommates have allergies, etc. Dogs are loyal, attentive and fun to exercise with. They need to have someone around to let them outside (assuming they're allowed in the house) to avoid accidents on the carpet. Cats are great, can be very affectionate but are also independent enough to stay on their own if you have to go away for a weekend. If you have the money and space larger animals like horses, alpacas and goats are great- they require a lot more research before buying, obviously. Pygmy goats are cool because they eat up blackberry vines (I live in western Washington) and they're adorable. Otherwise guinea pigs, hedge hogs and other small animals make great starter pets for children learning how to care for animals. There are always fish for the people who have allergies.

it really depends on your lifestyle - you need a pet that best fits your life. if you travel a lot a cat might be better, if you're very active a dog might be a better choice. think about the amount of time you spend at home, your disposable income, etc. and just try to make a responsible decision to become a pet owner. i have a cat and a german shepherd and i tell you - there's nothing like snuggling with my kitty but there's nothing like going hiking with my dog either!

Rabbits! I have two and you can keep them in a cage or just let them roam around. They make NO noise, are happy to eat just about whatever and are super easy to clean up after. I litterbox trained them and only have to vacuum up the poop. You can sit and pet them forever and everyone thinks a rabbit is adorable. They do like to chew on things because their teeth never stop growing, but just give them things to chew up and no problem.

I like cats--first for the reason that they are cleaner than any animal. When you get them all you have to do is sit them in litter and they don't have to be trained.
Dogs are good in the fact that they interact more. Cat's on average sleep 18 hours a day. Dogs also come on command, cats come if it is exciting enough to come. Although you can train cats, my cat is trained it fetch and come when I call him but he still does not show affection like a dog would.
It just depends on which you like better. A cat is cleaner but a dog show more affection....

big dogs are scared all the time. i had a big dog hid behind my legs. then a lil one and it would bark and growl. i have all kinds and love all kinds. it depends on what type and kind. like rodents i would say guinea pigs for a starter. they are easy and friendly. for more love but independent to cats are perfect. for unstopable love dogs. for really playful rodent ferrets or chinchillas, very easy fish, reptiles i love bearded dragons very friendly. dont have room for big cage or money lepeord gecko.and many more lovly pets. birds i love parakeet they are like mini vocal parrots. good luck
