My cat is 21 years old. He has arthritus and cataracts. We are taking him to the vet tommrow because he is not doing very well. He does not have cancer or any kind of illness, it's just old age. I am sooooo scared of loosing him. I've had him me ENTIRE life!!! I love him more than anything. When ever i have a problem, i go and talk to him. I don't know what i'll do without him. My parents said after he dies we will never get another pet. Please help me, he is my only pet and my best friend.

For those of you who said to put him to sleep, you should never answer dying animal questions. You have no clue what you were talking about. He was not dying, he was just dehyderated!!!!!

Poor kitty and poor you. I pray that the vet has good news for you. It is inevitable that someday he will go to kitty heaven and probably teach other kitties up there a few things. But for now, with arthritis and cataracts, those aren't life threatening so you should have your kitty with you for a while more. 21 years is a very long time. Be happy for all that wonderful time and the memories you created and will create. Make your cat as comfortable as possible and snuggle him from me. It is really hard to lose a loved one. Cats are part of the family and you love them with all your heart. It will be sad when he goes and he might even be around for more years. He has definately outdone the average cat life! You are very very lucky to have been able to enjoy him all these years. Take care and I am sure we all will be wondering how your cats visit with the vet went. I lost my most favorite cat I have ever had in March, had to put him to sleep because he was suffering severely from kidney failure. I still am very sad that he is gone and Im sure years from now I will still spill a tear for him. Be happy for the time you have had so far and yet to come. My best to you.

Wow, I have never heard of a cat living so long. That is amazing.
I am SO SORRY that he is not faring too well. Yet, you must realize that for you to have enjoyed him this long is remarkable!
Now, I understand loosing him will be most difficult. I had a cat that was so loyal that I ran to in times of need and compassion. There is a way about cats that can sooth and calm you. They know what you are feeling.
It will be the most uneasy moment ever- loosing a friend.
Though try and remember all the fun you have had and how you are thankful that you enjoyed so much.
It would be selfish to allow him to go on in pain when he is only holding on for you. You need to have a good talk with him, and let him know how you are so glad to have shared so many special times.
Nothing can replace an other pet.
In time you may get one .
Remember, aging is a natural part of life.
Your cat will always be a part of you. He taught you much. That life and love super cedes the barrier of difference.
Life will continue, and so will your shared memories.

Hon, there is no real help for this kind of pain. I have lost many friends animal and human in my life. I am 55 years old.
I have had dogs , horses, rats, cats and birds die.
I lost four best friends and MY DAD.
You really will never replace him, My son just tonight was remembering his RAT, my son is 27 and the rat died when he was 14. See, mourning is human, so indulge. And I have had the same close relations with a number of my friends, we were that close.
As for your parents never getting another animal....well there are two things.
First, after a while the void will be so big from the loss of your cat, THEY will want to fill it, even if it is a kitten that wanders home by accident.
Second, you sound old enough to take on your own responsibilities, and you either need to convey that and PROVE that to your parents or get your own place to have another cat to love!
LASTLY WHEN YOU GET ANOTHER CAT...Stick to another BOY they are sooooo much friendlier that the stuck up female felines. TRUST ME ON THAT!

It doesn't sound like he is dying yet, if he has arthritis and cataracts. He is up there in age, but can be with you a while longer. But remember, when the inevitable does happen, it will be hard, but he will always be with you, watching over you. They NEVER truley leave us. I honestly get messages from my kitty who passed at age 12:( almost a year ago. So just enjoy the time you have left. You can get a pet in the future, even if your parents don't get another one. And maybe they will change their minds. How old are you now?

We never really lose the ones we love, they are a part of us forever. But he is in pain, and it will only get worse. If you truly love him you must put his pain before your own and let him move onto a better place, where there is no more pain. You will be together with him again.
As for never getting another pet, is that what he wants for you? You have been such a good friend and companion to him, wouldn't he want you to share that love with another. He has always been there for you, he wouldn't want you sad and alone. You will know when the time is right, when you make that special connection again.
I wish you strength and peace for you both.

I think that it is probably best to put your cat to sleep. although its sad.. it will save him from pain.
Nothing or no one can replace a love that a pet had for you and you for him/her, it is just special. I just recently lost my dog "Sam" he was a great buddy.. he was with me through some tough years. basically no one here can help you, only offer advice, we all wish we could take back our pets illnesses but it just isnt possible, i would advise you to take him to the vets and put him to sleep, but if it wouldnt be too painful for you, maybe be there and hold him while they do it. that way you can have a cuddle and say goodbye...
I am so sorry this is the way it is.... i wish animals could live a whole lot longer and we had the power to take their ill health away...
I dont know you but have a hug anyway... *hugz*

It is very hard to lose a wonderful pet and my heart is with you. When I had to put my cat down I found the only way I could go through with it was to have him cremated after. Most of my friends, and my husband too, thought that I was crazy but it somehow did help. I have him on my mantle next to my mom and my dog. I know some people think that is weird but it really did help me. My thoughts are with you and I wish there was some way to make it easier.

Death is a part of life. You are going to have to deal with it as best you can. The one thing is that he will always live on in your memory.

I'm not sure the reasons your parents have for not getting another pet, I'm sure they sound good to them at the moment, but I can tell you from experience that it's hard coming home to an empty house.

First i think you need to accept that cats don't live forever, sadly. i lost my kitty too.
second, it may be hard at first to think of replacing him, but maybe if you go without a cat for a while and just recover from the loss you'll feel better about getting another cat.
Also, a little kitten could help cheer you up because they're so darn cute.
i'm sorry about your kitty, and i hope i helped.

That is really sad but if he has arthritis and cataracts then he might be in pain. If he can't move around or see then it might be kinder to put him to sleep. If he can move around fine then you probably don't need to consider that option yet but there will be a time in the near future when you have to say goodbye to your kitty. Say hello to him for me
