of course. why wouldn't they be? where you're born doesn't change your heritage.

Good question.
I think if they're born of Puerto Rican heritage, they'll always think of themselves as Puerto Rican, because they ARE. There is a strong PR pride there. It's also a way of distinguishing themselves from other Latino and Spanish ethnic groups.

I was married to a Puerto Rican for 10 years, and his whole enormous extended family considers themselves to be PR, including the kids who were born in the U.S. When asked about my Hispanic last name, I jokingly refer to myself as "Puerto Rican by marriage."

Ah, but it IS a bloodline! PR's are a blend of Spanish, African and Taino Indian blood and culture. The pride of heritage goes very deep. It's more than an island, in many ways. You need to go there and experience Puerto Rico, and you'll see what I'm talking about!

They are US citizens with Puerto Rican heritage. It doesn't make them less Puerto Rican.

Is anyone born in the US anything more than an American? You can be in touch with your heritage without constantly throwing in every ones face were your ancestry is from. If you were born in the US you are American, if that's not good enough for you then go to whence your family came.
