If the ground could cause a fumble it would make the game easier to officiate, but a good rule to remember is that the play is over when the ball is whistled dead. Usually the ground does cause a fumble when an opposing player tackles the carrier and hits him or her so the ball comes out after the arm hits the ground. If one player somehow trips on his own, and fails to hold onto the ball, that is a fumbled ball. The reason for that according to the NFL is because in theory the player lost the ball before it was downed. I am sure it is the same way at all levels.

I am an official of 18 years' experience and I can tell you that the reason the ground cannot cause a fumble is that once a ball in PLAYER POSSESSION has been downed by the runner being tackled or grounding himself, the play is DEAD and therefore any further action would be merely taking place with a dead ball. The "did his knee or elbow hit" stuff is actually VITAL to an official determining whether or not the ball was loose BEFORE contact with the ground. Only in the NFL could a guy fumble in your situation. He would have to run, trip and fall WITHOUT being contacted by a DEFENDER and have the ball come loose due to contact with the ground.

The knee or elbow being down is part of the definition of a tackle. A player being tackled signifies the end of a play. How can a fumble occur after the play is over?
In reality, the ground can cause a fumble. If a player catches the ball, runs five yards or so, falls on his own and fumbles the ball, it is a fumble. This applies only to the NFL and not NCAA.

No because if they start doin that then every time a player sets the ball down after a play is over people will be trying to jump on it saying its a fumble. Plus once you are tackled and hit the ground you are down and if they didnt have that rule then people would get tackled get back up and keep running so they have to have the rules the way they are

when would the play end??? would the ball carrier have to take the ball over to the ref??? at point is the play over??? when the players knee or elbow touch the ground the play is over! THAT is what makes the game easier to officiate. no matter how many rules are in place there will always be close calls so this idea wouldnt help at all!

How long would they have to wait after hitting the ground before deciding it's actually a tackle? It's a good rule; how can someone fumble after the play ends?

Having the ground cause the fumble would be the best rule the NFL could change. It would eliminate all instances of judging. The play ends when the ref blows the whistle. NFL would just have to invent whistles that are tied to the broadcast/replay so that you can see when the whistle blows. Its so damm simple its genius.

If the ground were able to cause a fumble, the number of fumbles would increase dramatically, therefore increasing the number of turnovers, therefore lowering the amount of scoring in the game, therefore making the game less enjoying to watch... If the ground could cause fumbles, it would make football boring. And, you don't know how to spell anything...
