I assume you're solving this equation for w.

1/(w-7) = -5 --> multiply both sides by w-7
1 = -5*(w-7) --> divide both sides by -5
-1/5 = w-7 --> add 7 to both sides
7 - 1/5 = w --> simplify
w = 6 and 4/5 or 6.8

That's about all there is to it. I hope this helps.

1/(w-7) = -5 ......multiply both sides by (w-7)
1 = (w-7)*(-5) ...Multiply through by -5
1 = -5w+35 .....Add 5w and subtract 1 on each side
5w = 34 .....Divide by 5
w = 34/5 = 6.8 ...Done

interchange the positions of -5 with w-7.

so you'll have
1
---- = w -7
-5

then transpose -7 to the other side to isolate w, which make the 7 positive

-1
--- + 7 = w
5

w = 6.8

2007-05-21 22:48:45 · answer #3 · answered by potato_lover 2 · 0 0

1/(w - 7) = -5
1 = -5(w-7)
1 = -5w + 35
-5w = -34
w = 34/5 = 6.8

multiply both sides of the equation by (w-7):

1 = -5 (w-7)

divide both sides by -5 :

1
------ = w - 7
-5

Add 7 to both sides:

-1
------- + 7 = w
5

w = -1 + 35
----------------------
5

w = 34/5

1/(w-7) = -5
1 = -5(w-7)
1 = -5w + 35
-34 = -5w
w = 6.8
