A desktop. It won't get stolen, it is easier to connect to new devices, your roommate won't break it or borrow it. It can have more power and adapt to anything that you need. Go with Windows Vista Home Premium and 2GB of RAM. Everything else will just work.
But if you MUST have a laptop, then go Toshiba. Visit a retail store and look with your eyes; feel with your hands and fingers; listen with your ears. Lift it to feel it's weight. Again, get Windows Vista Home Premium with at least 1GB of RAM. If you want this to last through college, then pay close attention to safety and security. It's a PC... That means Personal Computer. That means that NOBODY should borrow it. They should get their own darn computer.
Consider a retail store that happilly accepts returns if you don't like it. Costco and Staples have a hassle free return policy. Buy on-line, and you have on-line problems with service. After all, you did say "Money isn't really an issue"
Good luck and Happy Computing!

Even if money is no object you should identify needs versus wants. Spend your money first and satisfy all you needs and then everything else is gravy. So if your needs = a $2500 laptop but you have no problem spending $4000, then you can start fulfilling your wants. Identify them and take them to a local computer shop and ask them to make a recommendation. They can usually build you a high end machine at very reasonable prices. You could go to a best buy or circuit city or any other big chain retailer and because they do have a relatively young staff working the floor chances are they will be able to at least get you heading in the right direction.
If you go "big with features I would use a local shop they can also customize you system where as the retailer cannot., if you find standard features offered to everyone suits you, go to best buy and maybe save a few bucks

Well there are different types theres gaming laptops, but if you don't game then that's not for you. Dell's are cheap but they have lower build quality. Good build quality you should look for Asus or a Macbook. In my opinion you should get a Macbook they look good and easy to use and if you don't like OS X you can install Windows on it and Apple have great customer service. I personaly have a Macbook for my college studies and I walk a lot around campus and it's not that heavy. The Macbook is small and lighter than the Macbook Pro so if you want a bigger, 15.4 in., and more powerful laptop go for the Macbook Pro.

Although most people will probably tell you to get a HP or Apple... I highly recommend an IBM laptop. IBM may cost a little more but it is definately worth it. IBM has been a top computer and pc maker for years.
A good choice would be the IBM T41. Check it out on their website. It has everything any college student needs and more.

Each one will have its strengths and weaknesses. What it might come down to is what you will be using it for the most. If you are using it to take notes in class or to work on stuff away from your home/dorm room...get one that is small and light. If you not only will be using it for papers and classwork, but for gaming or for watching movies...get one with a bigger screen and great color. So just narrow down for yourself what you will be using it the most for and go from there. When I was looking at consumer reports I think Dell and Toshiba Satellites were rated highest across the board. GL

I think you should get a Mac. I bought a sony viao laptop for college and realize that the only kind of computers that the college had were Mac computers! So I had to learn how to use a Mac! And plus Mac laptops are cheaper than my Sony viao! About $1000 cheaper!

for starters make sure that it packs a lot of hard drive memory if you plan to save a lot of stuff on it. and I recomend that it has 2GB of memory. Big screen isnt bad either. and for added convinience make sure that it has wifi built in. Dont forget to buy software neccesary for what ever career it is that you are pursuing!HP isnt a bad brand you should check out their laptops. P.S. make sure that its not an outdated laptop, Check for the Windows Vista operating system on laptops!

Get a Mac, you won't be disappointed. They are easy to use, they are reliable and aren't subject to viruses. I have one and I love it.
