x + y = 180
one number is 40% more than other if one number is 100 other is 140.
x = 140/100 y
substitute this in the other equation you get
(140*y/100) + y = 180
240y = 18000
y = 18000/240 = 75
x = 180 - y = 180 - 75 = 105
and you get X and y as 105 and 75
