I'm pretty sure that it is either Nevada, Idaho or Missouri because in the episode where Bart/Lisa visit the state capital as a field trip the tour guide mentions that on the ceiling of the capital building is a bluebird(the state bird of the state they're in). And if you Google state birds those are the three states that have bluebirds as the state bird(New York is also a possibility as it also has a bluebird but in the episode where barney steals homers car and they have to pick it up, homer mentions that it hates new york, but since the car gets there in one night homer may mean new york city, not the state. anyways those are the four possible states that the Simpson's may live in. if anyone knows of an episode that rules out any of these states (episode list is available on wikipedia) please e-mail me at

The short answer is that Springfield does not exist. It doesn't have a real state, and the fact that it has no state is nothing more than a running gag. Springfield is more like "Anytown, USA". It's as if all of America was compressed into a single town, or a single state. Springfield is everywhere and nowhere.

It may sound weird, but the Simpson's may be from Oregon.
There's many coincidences with the home town of Matt Groening and the Simpson's.

No one knows because they never really say.
Springfield is a very popular town name so that is not a clue. They never go to the beach so that eliminates a few coastal states.
