No. When a woman gets married she would have the obligation of taking care of a husband and perhaps children. A nun is in a sense married to Jesus and sees her life's work as doing what he and the church want her to do with it. If she were to marry her other obligations would interfere with this.
I think that it is noble that someone could dedicate their life to God like this (I couldn't do it) and live by a higher standard then the rest of us. If they were just like the rest of us how would they be any different than us?
I do not think it is discrimination against women.

Priests, Pastors as well as nuns and all humans should be able to marry, there is nothing wrong with that, maybe there would be a lot less behind the scenes hidden promscuity and child molestation among the clergy.
This rule was made up by man and has no basis for it.

Nuns and priests can m,arry in some of the orthodox (eastern) religions. The issue is limited almost entirely to the Roman church.
They can marry - just can;'t remain nuns after that. Same as priests.
But IMHO the Roman church would do well to re-evaluate this position and create a class of married clergy.

I think that nuns could make great wives and mothers as they have their priorities straight..
I agree with your idea of discrimination as males should have the right to not be celibate and to marry and it is not an equal discussion with women. Good observation.

Priests and nuns are not necessary according to the Bible. Nuns are a Florence Nightingale thing.
God's word says that the young women should marry and bear children. Priests are not needed since Jesus is our High Priest after the order of Melchisedek.

To do any meaningful work for others, to work selflessly for a higher cause, to God's work, to reach the lofty goal of salvation, to enter into the world of spirituality, it would be ideal if the human being who has entered into this role remain chaste and celibate.
That is the ideal, and that is the beauty. The past is history but every human being can reach for the divine potential within.
If one craves a life of sexual interaction, then go ahead and be married. But to carry on with denial and desire is tough. That is where the Lord comes in.
The above applies to both men and women in the work of the Lord, regardless of their faith.
Indeed there a re many human beings who do very well overcoming the desires of the flesh and they rise to great inner strengths spiritually.
These human beings are to be respected for their great courage, for they do this for a higher common good.
Those who try to rise high and fall to temptations, they are not to be blamed. They too deserve our respect for trying.

Most Catholic nuns choose the lifestyle and accept that marriage would not be allowed.
It is a religious experience and devotion. The same way Buddhist Nuns and Monks choose that lifestyle, and religious devotion, and not to marry.
I don't think it is for outsider's to decide what is best for Catholic's or Buddhists for that matter.

No, that would absolve most of their commitment to God. Priest souldn;t marry either. Celibacy is not a horrible fate,as everyone connotes it to be. In Christianity, where sacrifice is revered, it is a great sacrifice to God that promotes growth. Even the Hindus believe that you are holy is your celibate because you are closer to the Gods,

when i chose to be a teacher i knew that i would have to prepare lessons, teach, grade books, etc. when i chose to be a mum stinky diapers and crooked smiles came with the job.
if a woman chooses to be a nun she takes on the celibacy that goes with the vocation. besides those who can't stand it are free to leave and can still serve God in other capacities. guess that why its mostly us on the outside that feel nuns are discriminated against. they themselves rarely complain.
