I'm no expert, but it could be that your first tampon absorbed the chlorine in the water and that's affected the smell of your discharge (and possibly the color). Chlorine is definitely a "cleaning product" smell. Your body is still expelling it. I can certainly think of worse and more dangerous smells. If you're near the end of your period, the discharge can become brownish. Call you doctor's office and ask to speak to a nurse or nurse practitioner if you're concerned (they're usually more likely to be able to speak to you). They won't charge you for the quick call, and they can determine whether you need to come in or not. I don't think it's an issue, but they'll alleviate any anxiety for you.

I am assuming you took both of them out....Maybe the cleaning smell is from the chemicals used in the pool and it got absorbed more than usual in the first tampon. Or maybe since that one was sent up higher, the chemically treated water went through a different tube or something. Haha, I don't know if I am making sense.
But sense it it a cleaning agent smell and not something raunchy, I assume it does have to do with the swimming.
If it persists or discomfort arises, definitely visit a doctor or call and explain the situation to make sure it's not harmful to the body. The body is pretty resilient though.
You could always use a search engine and type in key words about what you're experiencing or what you did and maybe some info will be on there.

Sounds like you have what a doctor would call an ammonia smell.
As long as you have them both out now you should be fine. Take a good long shower. Clean up well. But it might take a few days for the ph levels to return to normal. Try eating some yogurt with live bacterial culture. This can help get things back in order.
Possibly you may end up with a yeast infection at worse. There are products in the drug store for this.

Do not wear tampons when not on your period or for light flow. Tampons dry-out the vaginal walls causing damage which increases risk of TSS, not to mention other risks like vaginal infections, with less or no flow tampons will absorb more vaginal fluids, in turn causing more damage and higher risk. You will have to either use a thin liner or pad, a menstrual cup or a softcup - basically anything but a tampon or sponges would be safe to use.

If you have taken the old tampon out and you don't have a fever, then you are probably alright. This type of mistake does make you a higher risk for getting toxic shock syndrome. I think the odor of the discharge may be in your head. ( You could be paranoid because of your mistake.) I've never heard of a discharge with that type of odor. If the discharge continues or if you start to have any symptoms of being ill such as a fever, then see a doctor right away.

I think it's fine and nothing to worry about the smell could just be from the pool.
however if you see any of these symptoms go to a doctor asap
"Symptoms of TSS occur suddenly, usually during or just after a menstrual period. The more common symptoms include a high fever (over 102° F.), vomiting, diarrhea, a sunburn-like rash, and drop in blood pressure. Muscular aches and pains, headaches, sore throat, blood shot eyes, confusion, and peeling of the skin on the palms and soles may also appear. These symptoms are important and require prompt medical attention."
if you are really worried go see a doctor.
I've accidentlly done the exact same thing before and nothing happened. could this be in your head?

Did you remove both the tampons? If so and you still have the oder, I would at least call your GNY. You may have toxic shock. It happens when a women has the same tampon in for too long.
Toxic shock syndrome is a severe disease caused by a toxin made by Staphylococcus aureus.

it is improbable that you had two in...there is no way for a tampon to just travel around your body, so the original one must've fallen out somehow. sure, some people can, but it is unsafe. You definitely would've felt discomfort when you inserted the second one. The chemical smell is the chlorine.
