The United States of America consists of 50 states and one federal district, the District of Columbia. The conterminous forty-eight states — all the states but Alaska and Hawaii — are also called the contiguous United States or the "lower 48" and occupy much of central North America. Alaska is separated from the contiguous U.S. by Canada; together, they comprise the continental United States. Hawaii, the fiftieth state, is situated in the Pacific.

I agree with pete. america has way more than 50, you didnt ask for haw many states there are in the united states u asked for america. I think u should be more specific as there are three americas. north central and south. Mexico contrary to popular knowlege is a north american country, as is canada, although canada has providences so once again it neither counts nor does it matter it just kinda sits there...... Well they provide the world with canadian beacoln and canadian whiskey and canadian club soda. ne way be more specific ur asking how many states there are in a region that technically covers 3 continents unless u want to know how many are in the sum of three in which case i am too lazy to count.

There are offically 48 states in the United States & 2 republics as recognized by the Federal Goverment making up the 50 states as most people see, it even though it is not. Here's the proof to prove it.

(1) Rhode Island is not a state by it's constitution. As matter of fact it's full title is Providence and the People's Republic of Rhode Island.
(2) Texas is the Republic of Texas as per it's constitution.

Therefore we may think of them as states and they may be represented by stars on the American Flag, but they in truth are not states by law.

"The United States of America is a federal constitutional republic comprised of 50 states, one federal district, and several insular territories. Situated largely in the western hemisphere, its forty-eight contiguous states and the District of Columbia (coextensive with Washington, the capital)[2] lie in central North America between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, bounded on land by Canada to the north and Mexico to the south; Alaska is in the northwest of the continent with Canada to its east, and Hawaii is in the mid-Pacific.[3] Insular areas are scattered throughout the Americas and Pacific....."

ohevshalomel is right, you shouldn't make fun of people that ask questions. Not everyone on here is from the USA, you are only making people dislike Americans when you are so rude.
