what are these tomato bugs?

i never have pest problems in my garden except with my tomato plants.i get these worm looking bugs that have a big horn or spike on top on their heads.they are green.my grandpa knows but his memory is gone.so,what are they and how do i keep them from appearing this year?thank you

These are hornworms. If you use chemicals on your plants, a pesticide containing carbaryl will get rid of these pests. If you're going organic, an insecticide containing baccillus thuringiensis will work. By the way, if you see a worm with white egg looking things attached to it, don't kill it. These are the larvae of a parasitic wasp, that will kill the hornworm, and go on to produce more wasps.

Tomato worms. Best way I know of is to remove them by hand and then squash them. An insecticide will do the same thing, but since they don't come that often, on my tomatoes, I just hand remove.

They are called tomato hornworm, or tobacco hornworm. The book I have suggests handpicking them but says to leave the ones with white or tan cocoons stuck to their backs, they are bebneficial to parasitic wasps. If there are large numbers of them you can use b t on them. (Bacillus thuringiensis)

these are called horn worms and they are tough on tomatoes. Just pick them off and smash them. If you do not do this they will ruin your tomatoes.

try planting some marigolds near your tomatoes the scent from them prevent bugs from attacking our tomatoes for some reason i have been doing this for the last three years and been bug free on my tomatoes
