Hi everyone, I was interested in taking the Pharmacy Tech exam to become a certified Pharmacy Technician, but I'm having trouble finding a good study guide. Also, I have seen that there are classes available over the course of a semester, but I believe that if I have access to a good study guide that I should be able to pass the exam.

Anyone with any information would be great. Thanks for your help.

I am a CPhT, and before I took the test, my employer at the time, walgreens, put us through a study type class, and I am not kidding you, it felt like I studied for the wrong test. If I didn't have 7 or so years of experience in long term care pharmacy as well as retail pharmacy, I am sure I would not have passed. I think that the reason there isn't much info out there is that every test is different. If you can find a general book, you may be in luck. I haven't worked for a few years now because I am a SAHM, but I have continued to do the required C.E. to keep up my status. You could check with your employer (If it is a pharmacy) and see if they have a study program, or if not a pharmacy, check with your local pharmacy and see if they could get you access to a study guide. Most pharmacies, as recent as a few years ago, paid for the test and had incentives to continue to work there, (pay raises ect...) Good luck and I hope this helps!

I currently own Comprehensive Exam Review for the Pharmacy Technician http://www.bookfinder4u.com/detail/1401841317.html
which is an informative book with questions at the end of each chapter and a CD-ROM with practice exams. It is a good book. But I can't seem to keep interested in the reading. If you're like me, you may want to try something interactive.

I was looking for material at the American Association of Pharmacy Technicians http://www.pharmacytechnician.com and found a link to this http://www.pharmacytrainer.com/cdrom.php
I just recently ordered the package containing the CD-ROM, flashcards, and online practice problems, but have not yet received it. If you click on the sample pages, it seems that the material is presented in a way that is easy to read and understand and even a little entertaining.

If you already have a job (or job offer) in a pharmacy they should pay for the exam and help you prepare. When I worked for Walgreens they gave employees study materials including a deck of flashcards with brand name/generic names for drugs. The Cphts I know said this helped a lot. It will help you to talk to Cphts in your area who also took the exam at the location where you will be taking it. Just understand that where ever you go, pharmacies are very busy places so call ahead to see when a slow/good time would be to come in and ask how to best prepare yourself.

I recomend Mosby's Drug Consult. It gives practice tests and pretty much covers everyhting on the test. I just became certified in March. Good luck.

Know you basic laws, top 200 drugs, calculations, and you should be okay.
Here's a list of review books from APhA: http://www.pharmacist.com/store_tech.cfm

I know of many who've passed just by studying the review book.
