I turned my computer on one morning to find that the Windows media player kept popping up. Every time I shut it down, it would pop up 2 seconds later. I got the player to stop popping up, but the volume control box still keeps popping up every two seconds, alternating between "volume" and "muting".

Any ideas as to why this is happening and how I can get it to stop before it drives me totally insane?

I have ran virus checks, etc., and everything is fine in that regards.

try upgrading it to media player 11
if the problem still persist, do msconfig to see if there are any unwanted media player related items in the startup menu and disable the same....

Do you have another media player, such as Quick Time, Real Player, etc? If so, it could be a conflict, and Windows Media Player is trying to get you to make a choice as to which one you want to play your media. Have you recently added another player? If so, that could be the problem.
