I came across your question, and I felt like I had to answer because I was in almost the exact same place as you are last year. I'm a high school senior, my GPA is about 4.2, my ACT was 34, I go to school in the Chicago suburbs and I just got into Northwestern. However, I also applied (and got into) Mizzou, and I think that I'm headed for Missouri. It's not because Northwestern doesn't have an amazing journalism school-because they do. And despite how expensive Northwestern is (about $45,000 a year) they gave me a lot of financial aid. I don't know if money is a concern for you, but it definitely was for me. Mizzou is offering me a lot of money and a lot of special programs because of my test scores. If it interests you- Mizzou has a program for journalism students who get 33 or above on their ACT (since you're only one point away and have to take it again anyway) where you get money to travel abroad and a personal faculty advisor and a special dorm and you get to start taking journalism classes your freshman year. When you are in a journalism program-regardless of where you go- you spend most of your time taking liberal arts credits. So any school with a strong journalism program is going to be strong generally with the liberal arts disciplines. Also if you plan on possibly getting a master’s degree a journalism degree is a great undergrad to have. My mom really wants me to be a lawyer so she’s looked into it. I don't know if you have started on your college visits yet, but I highly recommend it. I visited both Northwestern and Mizzou twice and when you realize that you have to live there for four years it does change your perspective of the school because there are things outside the academic programs. If your question is whether or not you’ll get into Northwestern- I can’t imagine that you wouldn’t. I can’t tell you what the best college for you would be because it’s a very individual thing. If it helps, the other schools I applied to were Marquette (in Wisconsin), Drake (in Iowa), and University of Illinois. The big three journalism schools that you’ll find mentioned everywhere on the web are Northwestern, Mizzou, and Columbia. Good luck with your college search!
