There really are too many variables to this, but the basic answer would have to lie in that their belief in themselves being right is so strong, that they hate and believe that everything that they don't agree with is wrong.
I totally agree that for people who say that they are following the tenets of religion (which basically says to be a nice person, in the loosest translation ever), they really aren't following what should be interpreted as correct practice of any major religion.
The other thing that has to be pointed out, is that religion has historically been used as justification in wars and killing. Once that precedent has been set, it's easy to use something over again, citing the precedent as your reason why, even if the reason is still illogical.

Do you hate the religious right? I saw a lot of posts celebrating the death of Jerry Falwell - seems like there's a lot of hate on the left too.
Sure, Jesus would disapprove of hatred. I'll admit, there are a few nutcases, like the preacher from Kansas who does all of the "God Hates F@GS" stuff. Be careful about judging millions of people by a vocal few.

Your question is very provocative. You and I both know that the religious right (myself included) is not "full of hate".
The truth is that we have morals and ethics and try to live by them.
Those who would like to live morally and ethically, but just can't seem to do it, are jealous and thus hateful of those of us who TRY.
Statistically, we give much more in charity than leftwingers. We are the first to pull together to help a person or place in need; more money is donated by righties than lefties, BY FAR.
I don't hate anyone. I feel bad for people full of hate....what sad, sad lives they lead. You know who I'm talking about....those who hate GEORGE W. BUSH, DICK CHENEY, DONALD RUMSFELD, CONDI RICE etc.

I do not see any hate coming from the religious right nor from the religious left nor from the religious middle. I do hear a constant tirade of hate speech from the Godless left.
They HATE Bush.
They HATE Cheney.
They HATE Rove.
They HATE Haliburton.
They HATE Limbaugh.
They HATE Coulter.
They HATE Hannity.
They HATE O'Reilly.
They HATE Rumsfled.
They hate, hate, hate and then accuse others of hatred.

Most people I know who go to church a lot are really big sinners. I guess that's why they feel the need to go to church a lot.
