Well...'cause there *is* a Canadian accent. You don't hear it because you're a native. I'm a native Western New Yorker, and on a trip to London a long time ago, a street merchant asked me if I was Canadian. I had enough of a "Canadian" accent, having grown up so close by, having watched Canadian TV and listened to Canadian radio, that he was fooled. Now that I've left Western New York, I laugh when I hear the typical WNY accent--there definitely is one! Western New Yorkers don't hear it because they grew up with it.
Yes, Canadians (most of them I've ever heard/known, including a current Canadian transplant now living near me in Nebraska) pronounce "about" more like "aboot," though that's not an entirely accurate transliteration of the accent.

Actaully a few people I know from Saskatchewan and Newfoundland actually say about in a way that sounds close to aboot. I was suprised when I heard them say about that way, I always thought it was just a stereotype as well.
