7-8 Cours Elémentaire 1 (CE1), 10th grade 2nd grade
8-9 CE2, 9th grade 3rd grade
9-10 Cours Moyen 1 (CM1), 8th grade
10-11 CM2, 7th grade 5th grade
11-12 6th grade Collège (Junior high school) 6th grade
(There used to be a 7th grade, but it no longer exists)

Since school is very demanding, with classes lasting all day and a lot of homework, sports and cultural activities are unusual within the school. French schools share the same goals as American schools: they want to prepare students to face the world, create good citizens, and imbue their students with knowledge that may or may not be used for earning money in the future. Most importantly, both countries try to teach their students to think creatively, so that they will discover solutions to problems that will occur in the future.
