So I got first light with my pair of 12X60 skymaster binoculars from celestron and I am having a problem with them. I wear glasses and need to as I have astigmatism but no matter how I adjust them when I look through them at brighter objects like the moon, venus, saturn etc. the image splits so there are two of them. is there something I'm doing wrong?

Have you adjusted the interocular distance and focussed the binocular for each eye? If you have done that and you're still seeing double, either your eyes or the binoculars are misaligned. Some people just have trouble merging the images in binoculars, and it gets harder as he power increases. If it's the binoculars themselves, you need to return them for adjustment or replacement. Here's a test for alignment: (from http://www.montysmagic.com/binocular/index.html )

• Rest the binoculars on a level table in a way such that they are focused on a distant horizontal line. From a few inches behind the binoculars, look through each lens in turn. The horizontal line in each lens should be seen as horizontal, and should be in approximately the same position (vertically) in both lenses.
• Repeat the above, but look at a vertical line. Again both lines should be vertical and should be in essentially the same position in the lenses.

Binocular Double Vision

I've repaired binoculars that displayed "double vision" and it's always due to one of the objective lenses being out of alignment. (The objective lenses are the huge lenses at the front of the binoculars). If you know which side of the binoculars hit the wall , I'd suggest that is the objective that needs re-alignment. Another way is to look at the binoculars (not through them) and see how the objective lenses line up with the binocular body. Now how to re-align the lens? Unscrew the lens from the binocular body. This lens has an extremely fine threading and so when you screw the lens back into the body make VERY SURE that it is being threaded properly. If you think this is beyond your ability then perhaps someone else has another solution.

This probably indicates that the binoculars have received a knock somewhere along the way and are out of collimation: the two optical axes are no longer parallel. This is something that happens quite a lot with the inexpensive Chinese binoculars on the market today. While it's possible to adjust the collimation yourself, I'd recommend returning them to your dealer to get them aligned.

I recently bought a second hand pair of Enbeeco Navigon 7 x 50s in Tavistock Market in Devon , UK. (Tavistock is well worth a visit, try The Two Bridges Hotel for peace and tranquillity!)). When I got home and tried them outside I found that there was very bad double vision. When I tried dismantling them, one objective lens unscrewed smoothly and easily but the other was rough and difficult and left greasy swarf on the thread. I cleaned this off and screwed the lens back in easily and the problem was solved. They must have been dropped and the lens moved which crossed the threads.
