Check your dvd burner if it's compatible for both formats. Some older models can only use one or the other...

Certain DVD burners that are built in computers are only able to burn DVD+R

Yep I concur...probably an older DVD+R model only. Get a new drive. You can get a nice NEC dual layer dvd burner at newegg.com for around $30.

You have a DVD+ writer. There's nothing wrong, just make sure you use DVD+ disks.
