As a spoof on compassionate conservatism, my friend Robert calls himself a "compassionless liberal." It's funny, but in light of the recent immigration upheaval, it makes me wonder what ever happened to the compassion in compassionate conservatism? Indeed it would seem that when it comes to illegal immigrants we compassionate conservatives are quick to judge, point fingers away from ourselves, and hate monger those who are committing the haneous crime of illegal immigration. In fact, somewhere in the middle of all the rabble, I know, being conservative myself, that there is a conscientious argument to be made against the immigration bill. But my message for you today is, if you're focused on the lawbreakers as being brown-skinned, then you're voice isn't being heard. We who have rightfully inherited this country from the sacrifices of our ancestors are in grave danger of losing what we have, and when we lose it, it won't be because of immigrants. Yes, you heard me right.

Yes, you heard me right. The immigrants, as thoughtless as they might have been on this issue, aren't our threat at all. The threat is us, and our inability to appreciate what we have. Twenty years. Twenty years it has been that *us*, we the the people have ignored our own laws. And in one week we have managed to exhonorate ourselves of all guilt and find righteous indignation for those who would ignore the same laws. Whatever happened to America being the leader and trend-setter of the free world? If we don't do what we say we're going to do, how can we expect anyone else to? Fact is, ungratefulness will make us lose this nation faster than anything else. In 1986 we said we were going to re-enforce the border, and keep illegals out of the welfare system, on top of a myriad of other restrictions. We said we were going to crack down on employers who knowingly hired illegals.

Twenty years later we are throwing home loans, credit cards, and cell phones at them as though amnesty was our favorite word. When will we wake up and realize that this bill isn't giving anyone amnesty who hasn't already had it for years? And who gave it to them? Was it a conspiracy by the Mexican government? Maybe. Was it our own ungrateful, selfish, laziness? Absolutely. Only when we put guilt where guilt is due, and take some responsibility will we conservatives be able to make the real points that need to be made about this bill. Yes, maybe it is still a bad bill. But like I said, that point isn't being made because we are up in arms about the "lawbreakers." The only lawbreakers are we the people. And if we don't respect our own laws, then it doesn't matter what anyone else does because the nation is already overthrown. Chaos is already here when the rightful heirs no longer desire to protect what they have been given.

We each (legal or illegal) need to say a prayer of thanks for this wonderful heritage. Once we do we'll have a reality check, and some real logic on how to deal with this problem. Maybe nothing changes on the outside, and maybe it's still wrong to give amnesty as it is being proposed. But if it is, it will be because we understand our principles, not because someone else doesn't. So the question is, do you understand them?

Jason A - My point is how come you are wanting them to be gone now, instead of saying you want American companies to be held accountable for their participation in the whole mess? Why are you focused on making immigrants leave instead of focused on holding your country responsible? Do you not recognize this is our fault?

txguy880 - If you want the laws upheld then why do you not recognize that we haven't been upholding them? How can you apply the law to an alien if you don't apply it to yourself? That is why we conservatives are not being compassionate, because we are quick to find the aliens guilty not recognizing that we gave handed them the sword they are smiting us with.

janeyw - Rationalization? Would you care to point out where I have equivocated or minced words? Have I not been direct in stating that this is in fact a real problem, yet not one that we are innocent in? Please explain your argument better than simple insults.

driveranderson - If you think I'm playing the race card then you've missed my point completely. This issue is political, but not for the illegals. If you wanted them to stand in line, then why didn't you make them do it a long time ago? That is my point. And now they're here to stay, but you didn't care about that until recently. So where were the politics in 1986? I'm trying to say, let's take some responsibility rather than point fingers at the border-hoppers. Let's do what we have to do, but take our own slice of the guilt: it's called a statute of limitations.

frugernity - I'm not sure what your problem with that patriotic statement is...was there something within American history that nullifies it? Please support your arguments with facts because last time I checked America was forged and kept in place by those who were willing to pay for it.

Well now I guess you are upset that we "Compassionate Conservatives' Stopped the travesty of amnesty for a while longer, only shows that the stupid still under estimate our ability to stop bad legislation. Using the race card is a nice attempt, but I think those who follow the laws in becoming citizens should get first opportunity and more colors of the rainbow are represented by those fine law abiding individuals. It is not about race any way, it is political and you do not talk about that, you message is garbage.

Its obvious to me that you like to hear yourself talk. (or in this case, write)

Also, its very perplexing to me to why people are called as not having compassion just because we would like to see the rule of law followed. We know if we break the law, we have consequences to pay. Most of us think this should be a universal concept instead of government deciding on which criminals they will prosecute or not.

In Chicago, there are illegal Mexicans, Irish, Polish, Russians, Jews and other nationalities. I want every white, brown and black person here illegally gone.

If you were never legal in the first place, I want you gone.

If you were here on a Visa or other program and it expired, I want you gone.

If you came as a tourist and overstayed your permitted time, I want you gone.

America First - Always.

Rightfully inherited this country from the sacrifices of our ancestors?

You need to tear yourself away from your John Wayne movies long enough to take a course in American history.

And congratulations on the most long-winded question I've ever seen.

It's like all the "charities" the compassionate conservatives started - and... then hired the wives of big campaign contributors at $150,000 + a year to administer the charities. It's all a big smoke screen.

We are here, right where we've always been. Most conservatives I know are very compassionate. Liberals are a different matter.
