Okinawa was to be the jumping off point for the invasion, but as there was no invasion it was use as the jump of for the occupation of Japan.

Your question is a bit vague. US troops were stationed in both Australia and New Zealand, both island nations. As the war progressed, US troops occupied numerous islands in the pacific starting with the French Caledonia off the east coast of Australia and moved north until they finally gained control of Taipan which would have been the island for the invasion. Japan surrended before this invasion took place.

The island your asking for is Iwo Jima. It is a very small island about 600 miles south/southeast of Japan. It was a perfect staging ground, or "jump-off point" for the invasion of Japan because of it's airfield, putting it well within striking distance of the main island of Japan, but keeping our troops far enough out of harms way once they captured it.
I highly recommend renting, or better yet buying the movies Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima. They are two well done movies that came out last year, both directed by Clint Eastwood, giving the perspective from both sides of the battle.

We never invaded Japan. After exploding the Atom bombs they surrendered. Had we invaded the Phi pines and Indonesia would have been used as well as China.
