depends on the size of the resolution of the camera and the level of compression (jpegs and other frmats compress the file by using math to change the file). 2 g should be good enough for daily use for most people, but if going on a trip, multiple cards are a good idea. I get about 500 pics

well I get about 100 or so pics on a 256mb SD card with my 5.1 mp Nikon. So if I used simple math to extrapolate an approximate answer, I would say 256mb goes into 2gb 8x, so 100 pics x 8 = approximately 800 pics at 5 mp.
Of course this will vary.

It depends what format you're shooting in. My 2GB card holds ~210 RAW, ~540 large fine JPGs in my 10.2 mega-pixel camera.

approximately 1000-6000 depending on the megapixel amount. could possibly do more in thumbnail format.
