You can get a Toyota Highlander with a third row seat (better for small children than adults though) and a four-cylinder that gets 22city/28highway MPG for about $26k. And although the Patriot is a great vehicle that my brother is looking into buying, I would not recommend it for you since it DOES NOT have a 3rd row of seats.

Minivan or forget good MPG, because if you do not want a minivan, you'll have to go with a large SUV and they are not famous for fuel economy.
Some station wagons have what you need, but the third row seat is facing backwards in them (although kids like it.)
A Mercedes E-class station wagon comes to mind.

The new Toyota Rav-4 has an optional third row seat and I think it would fit your situation perfectly. It gets good mileage (in the 20's), it has plenty of room for kids, and it is not by any means a "DREADED MINIVAN"! lol.

Go get a van, and be done with it. You're hauling your kids, you're hauling your friend's kids, you've probably got a dog or diaper bag or sports gear in there too, right?
You're a soccer mom now - get the van.
