I would go for something upright as the wonder wave are naturally spreading, so you want something that doesn't do the same.
A zonal Geranium would do the trick. Check out this site for some good ideas.

Potato vine, Scavolia, New Guinea Impatience. licorice plant. vinca vine. The petunias are heavy feeding sun loving plants, the plants I suggested can keep pace with the petunias.

other low-growing annuals--sweet alyssum, dwarf marigolds, lobelia and violas...

you might also want to try begonias, geraniums (florist pelargoniums--not the hardy geraniums) impatiens and, again, lobelia

a 3rd choice would be marguerites, geraniums, marigolds, dusty miller, viscaria, and lobelia in a Portuguese wine barrel
