I'm really pleased to hear from all of you so far. I admit I was hoping to bait a few rednecks but it's reassuring to know that America is still safe, for the most part, with you people. Lol. I suppose it was a bit ambitious to find rednecks in "sociology". Where should I re-post? Sports?

Reposted, sports.
"Is this the typical American sports fan?"
I'm gonna get it now....

There is a new revolution in the U.S. these days where certain groups are trying to breakdown the sort of usage of rhetoric that you and most of the people who have answered used. Terms such as "redneck" and "white trash" SEEM like ways to casually poke fun of people who we disagree with or find funny... but actually these terms serve to keep people grouped in a class structure where white low-income (and therefore, usually uneducated) families are kept down by social indifference due to the derogatory way we refer to them.

Please take your need to place people into economically-classified groups out of the U.S. We already have enough people doing that here as it is.

Well, I'm half British and half American, so I think I can answer this in a way you will understand. That photo is of a American most likely from the southern states. They are very good people but alittle crass in English terms. Some people call them "white trash" here in the States. But all in all, most Americans are not really any different from anyone else. Good and bad in every nationality my friend.

I don't really think he's a red-neck. (They tend to wear flannel shirts and drive old pick-up trucks.) I think that guy is more either an old hippy or someone who took on a hippy image even though it was no longer "The Thing". Sports fans tend to wear jerseys, shorts, and baseball caps.

That guy looks like enough people to say he's a "type", but its more likely he's someone who tries hard to be cool, doesn't want to look like the people who get off the commuter rail at rush hour, doesn't want to look "snooty", and generally lacks taste and intellect.

"Loser" is pretty much the type he appears to be in that picture. That's not saying he's a loser - just that the picture makes him look like a giant one. There are quite a few of them walking around the U.S. They don't usually have signs to point out their spelling skill. They generally hang out in areas where other losers tend to be as well. In general, there are often isolated pockets of people like this in certain areas. They do, though, infiltrate even the best shopping and business areas sometimes.

Ahh yes RedNeck-A-Saurus.
A very common sub species here in the US. Mostly harmless (unless drunk with a gun). They frequently have a severe aversion to spelling and proper English.

Most often supporters of Bush (and by extension Blair) they smell quite bad after a long day in the summer sun and don't have the ability to comprehend opinions that differ with theirs (which they get form Fox news most times.)

Don't judge all Americans by them.
There are certainly the well bred as well.

Cheers!

I like the first answer. Just note that "red-necks" do not constitute the majority of Americans (but depends on the city you're in).

That would be the classic redneck type of American. His clothing and the fact that he can't spell the word moron are the clues.
