I am referring to death by consumption in relation to several books that refer to the problem. These are books that have taken place in centuries past. Is it consumption of the mind? Consumption of a foreign substance? Is it referring to something totally different? Thanks for your help.

Consumption is the name that was given to Tuberculosis (because it seemed to 'consume' people from within...coughing up blood was one of the first signs). It would also 'consume' the person as most would waste away before they died.
So death by consumption (presumably you're referring to a person in history) would mean dying from Tuberculosis.
It was an untreatable epidemic for years but it can now be controlled in developed countries because of vaccines that have been developed as well as antibiotics for treating the symptoms once the disease has spread.
Not nearly the killer it used to be, it is now more commonly referred to as 'TB' for tuberculosis...the bacillius that causes the disease: Mycobacterium tuberculosis as identified and described on March 24, 1882 by Robert Koch.

With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: “Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his peoples. And God himself will be with them. 4 And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:3,4 And they will certainly build houses and have occupancy; and they will certainly plant vineyards and eat [their] fruitage. 22 They will not build and someone else have occupancy; they will not plant and someone else do the eating. For like the days of a tree will the days of my people be; and the work of their own hands my chosen ones will use to the full. 23 They will not toil for nothing, nor will they bring to birth for disturbance; because they are the offspring made up of the blessed ones of Jehovah, and their descendants with them. 24 And it will actually occur that before they call out I myself shall answer; while they are yet speaking, I myself shall hear. 25 “The wolf and the lamb themselves will feed as one, and the lion will eat straw just like the bull; and as for the serpent, his food will be dust. They will do no harm nor cause any ruin in all my holy mountain,” Jehovah has said. Isaiah 65:21-25 “And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be brought to ruin. And the kingdom itself will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it itself will stand to times indefinite; Daniel 2:44 Accurate knowledge of Jehovah, faith in him and his son and knowing his will for man. The pain and suffering he will do away with is what all people suffer today. Poor economy, illness, death, homelessness, war, etc. Obviously the churches don't teach this or recognize the Kingdom Jesus taught us to pray for. What a shame as it is the only government to fully serve and remedy mans problems.

None of these answers are, strictly speaking, correct. Technically, the answer by "GetDark" is close enough; however, you asked: "what exactly is death by consumption"?

Phthisis pulmonalis - Tuberculosis Phthisis is Greek for consumption. So, given the actual medical root of the name, and the diseases prevalence in English speaking nations, rather than saying someone died from Phthisis, they said the same word--simply translated to their native tongue, bringing about the saying, "death by consumption."
